Chapter 8

His brown eyes stared at her with an intensity that had her fumbling to remember why she shouldn’t. She heard herself saying yes before she could overthink it. They agreed to meet by her room in the Palace in an hour. Aquata was lounging on the couch in Theia’s room when she swam through the doorway. Fin rested contently nearby on the floor. As the second triplet, Aquata wasn’t particularly close with Theia, but Aquata understood what it was like to be in the shadow to the first born.

“Do you need something?” Theia asked. “I don’t have a lot of time.”

“Cora asked me to make your jewelry for the dinner party tomorrow.”

“You always make such beautiful things. I’m sure whatever you come up with will be great.” Theia moved to her bedroom and set her bag and the trident for her father on her bed.

From behind her Aquata said, “I know.”

Theia laughed and turned to see Aquata in the doorway to her closet. “You’re so humble.”

Waving a hand dismissively Aquata entered the closet. “I really wish you’d let me pick things out for you. Everything in here is so plain.”

Theia shook her head and pulled an orange top that matched her scales from off a hanger. “Do you think this would be good for dinner?”

Aquata gasped. “You have a date! You only care about how you look when it’s a date. Who is it?”

“Commander Calder.”

Aquata grinned. “Alea said he’s the most handsome merman she’s ever seen.”

“Alea says a lot of things,” Theia mumbled and put the garment back.

Aquata helped Theia pick out what to wear for her date. They debated back and forth until settling on the orange top Theia had picked out originally. Theia quickly polished her scales and scrubbed the rune ink from teaching all day from her skin. Aquata insisted on putting Theia’s hair in braids with an amber comb holding it in place.

A knock at the door made Aquata sigh dramatically. “I’m so jealous, and don’t worry I’ll make an excuse to Father for you at dinner. Although you’re going to get another lecture.”

That made Theia pause before she opened the door. How could she have forgotten about Father?

“Thank you.” Theia gave her sister a quick hug.

Calder was indeed on the other side of the door. He even had a bouquet of blue sea lilies that he handed to her.

“The color reminded me of your eyes,” he said.

She took them graciously, “Thank you.”

Aquata moved to behind the door so Calder couldn’t see her. She mouthed, “He’s perfect.”

Theia handed the flowers to Aquata who grinned and mouthed. “You better kiss him.”

A flush rose on Theia’s scales, her rune had come off when she polished her tail.

“Shall we?” She closed the door firmly behind her, she took Calder’s offered arm.

They were only a few fins from the door when Calder asked. “Which sister was it? And what did she say to cause you to blush?”

Aquata’s laughter rang out through the door.

“I’ll tell you later. Where are we going for dinner?”

They left the Palace without running into anymore of her family.
